About Hazleton, PA

Hazleton, ZIP code 18201, was incorporated as a city in 1891; however, the area was occupied by settlers since 1809.  The anthracite coal industry drove the growth of the Hazleton during the mid-19th century.  The town was meant to have been named “Hazelton” as a reflection of the numerous of hazel trees.

An interesting attraction near Hazleton is the Eckley Miners’ Village, a mining museum.  The Hazle Township Community Park is another well-visited site in the city.

What is mold?

Mold is a living organism (fungi) that needs moisture, air, and a food source to grow. Mold spores can be found throughout the air and reproduce easily. When visible mold growth is found inside a home, interior air mold levels typically rise and can cause adverse effects to humans and pets. If you suspect your Hazleton home has mold, a professional inspection including a Moisture Intrusion Evaluation is strongly recommended.

Is mold dangerous?

Airborne and surface mold spores can cause allergic and respiratory issues. Some people are more susceptible to mold exposure than others due to underlying medical conditions.

Is mold removal expensive?

It depends, of course, upon the size of the job and the areas affected.  A smaller job of a few square feet can generally be handled without professional assistance (as noted in the US EPA Guide to Mold), so the only expense involved there is the cleaning supplies and PPE (such as rubber gloves and masks).  Once you go beyond the smaller jobs, there is a wide range of possible costs based upon work required.  If porous components like drywall are contaminated with active growth, then removal and disposal are required.  However, situations that involve cleaning generally involve lower costs than ones that require removal of walls, carpeting, etc.

How does mold get into Hazleton homes?

Hazleton sits at one of the highest elevations in Pennsylvania, which brings significant snowfall, freeze-thaw cycles, and seasonal moisture. These conditions commonly cause ice dams on roofs, foundation cracking from frost heave, and crawl space moisture — all of which can lead to mold growth. Older homes in the greater Hazleton area, many built during the coal mining era, often have stone or block foundations that are particularly susceptible to moisture intrusion.
